Burn Permits
Burn Permits are issued under specific restricted conditions, and in certain rural areas of Elk Grove and Galt for property maintenance.
The annual permit allows the burning of grass, tree trimmings, brush, and weeds ONLY.
You can only burn on the property the Burn Permit is issued to. For further details, please reference the Burn Permit Guidelines (PDF).
Burn Permit Eligibility and Guidelines

Burn Permit Information
- The fee for a burn permit is $30.00.
- Burn permits are valid for a calendar year (January 1 to December 31).
- All permit requests will be verified prior to issuance. Once approved, you will receive your permit via e-mail. Please allow 3 to 5 business days for processing.
Application and Payment Methods
- Apply online for a Burn Permit. You will receive an invoice via e-mail to make payment.
- Apply for a Burn Permit in person at Fire Headquarters.
- Checks, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and Cash (exact amount; staff have no change).
- Once you have paid for your permit, refunds cannot be issued. Please verify that you are eligible for a burn permit prior to purchase using the Burn Area Map.
Agricultural Burning
Burn permits are not issued for agricultural burning. Large piles require a permit from the Sacramento County Agricultural Commission. Please contact them at 916-875-6603.
