The following outlines fire and life safety requirements for fairs, carnivals, etc. Click here for the requirements. It may be necessary to submit plans to the Cosumnes CSD Fire Department for approval. Be sure to allow enough time to go through the approval process, which could take up to three weeks.

Fireworks
The communities of Galt and Elk Grove allow the use of Safe and Sane fireworks in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations during the Fourth of July season only. Display fireworks for large events require a permit from the Cosumnes CSD Fire Department. To dispose of Safe and Sane fireworks call (916) 405-7100 or drop by any of our eight fire stations during normal business hours. To dispose of illegal fireworks, please call the Fire Marshal, George Apple at (916) 405-7120.

Parades
Materials used on many parade floats are highly combustible and may cause a catastrophic event if precautions are not taken to mitigate the danger. The Cosumnes CSD Fire Department has established guidelines to assist the community with applying the California and Title 19 California Code of Regulation to floats during all phases of construction, decoration, and dismantling operations. Parade float guidelines are available in PDF format.

Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly
You must go to the Department of Social Services to obtain a Fire Safety Inspection Request Form #850. Once the Cosumnes CSD Fire Department receives the form from Social Services we will then mail you all of the RCFE's requirements for the next step in the process.

Large Family Day Care
The Cosumnes CSD Fire Department plan reviews and inspects large family day care facilities upon receipt of a Fire Safety Inspection Report #850 form from Social Services. See our requirements for Large Family Day Care Facilities.

Tents for Events
Tents are a good idea to keep people shaded, warm, and protected from other natural occurrences; however, they can also provide a natural danger. The Cosumnes CSD Fire Department regulates the use of tents in accordance with the California Fire Code and Title 19 of the California Code of Regulations for Public Safety. Contact the Cosumnes CSD Fire Department for more details. Plans may be required. Please refer to the Festivals/Carnivals/Fairs section or click here for requirements for additional regulations and information.

Weddings
Although candles can be beautiful they can also be very dangerous. The California Fire Code and Title 19 California Code of Regulations prohibits the use of open-flame devices in places of assembly except as approved by the Fire Chief. Contact the Cosumnes CSD Fire Department for additional information.

Weed Abatement
The Cosumnes CSD Fire Department prides itself on our continuing effort to reduce the fire risks in Elk Grove and Galt by conducting an annual Weed Abatement Campaign each fire season. The campaign typically runs from April through October with the Notice to Abate Weeds being mailed to property owners during the month of May.

The Weed Abatement Ordinance requires parcels of 2 acres or less to have weeds cut no higher than 2 inches tall. Parcels larger than 2 acres must have a 30 foot fire break around all structures. For further details click here: Weed Abatement Guidelines.

Remember, The Cosumnes CSD Fire Department is looking to reduce the risk of fire hazards only. Although some parcels may be unsightly, it may not constitute a fire hazard. Fire hazards exist when overgrown weeds, brush, or trimmings are adjacent to, or could potentially threaten structures, such as dwellings, barns, storage buildings, stored vehicles, etc.

All complaints to the Fire Prevention Bureau must be submitted on a Weed Abatement Complaint Form or our Online Form or through the Weed Abatement Hotline at (916) 405-7115. An on-site inspection will be conducted to determine if the parcel(s) require weed abatement in order to protect nearby structures or wooden fences from fire. Due to laws prohibiting illegal searches, the Fire Prevention Bureau will not look over fences, climb fences, enter a back yard or enter a residence to confirm weed complaints. All weed violations must be visible from the street. If the site is determined to be a fire hazard, the owner/tenant is to abate the hazard by discing /mowing, providing defensible space, or cleanup of brush or trimmings.
