For this month’s Staff Spotlight, we are glad to recognize Jen O’Leary, Firefighter at Cosumnes Fire Station 73 B-shift. She leads by example as an active Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and takes pride in her work. “The better our EMTs, the stronger support we can be for the medical center to better help our residents,” she said.
O’Leary played softball for California State University Sacramento while earning her bachelor’s degree in child development. After graduating from CSUS, she attended EMT school through Cosumnes River College. Her father was a firefighter in Oakland and her twin brother is a firefighter in Indiana. To make certain that fire service was the right career for her, O’Leary went on to intern with the then Elk Grove Fire Department. She successfully completed the Fire Academy and has worked at the agency ever since. “Even after 13 years, I still love coming to work every day,” she said.
O’Leary loves working in a great community with a small-town feel alongside happy employees. “We have the highest level of customer service bar none,” she said. “Everyone puts on a smile and a positive attitude, even in the middle of the night, which helps me keep smiling.”
Her love of adventure has taken her all over the world. She went on an African safari last year and in 2018 she plans to kayak the Amazon River and travel to Spain. When not working or traveling, she likes to spend time with her family and her box turtles.
